Island of Hvar

Eclectic, dynamic, and unique, Hvar is a lavish island where culture and lifestyle merge into a perfect blend—from scenic hills scattered with vineyards and stone walls to sunny beaches. The island’s natural beauty is perfectly paired with the charisma of vibrant town life and countless cultural and recreational opportunities along its 270 kilometers of coastline.

A land of contrasts
The longest Croatian island is also the island of diversity – from the tranquility of fertile Stari Grad Plain and the steep southern cliffs crashing into the sea, to the gentler east and the forested northern shore. Hvar will amaze even the most seasoned global travelers. The green island is known for its diverse flora, especially olives, grapes, rosemary, lavender, and Dalmatian pine trees.

Its dramatic coastline is a playground for explorers, while the underwater rock formations attract divers. There are also 143 speleological sites that still hide mysteries below the surface. Hvar is the sunniest island in the Adriatic, with an average of 2,800 hours of sunshine annually. For more than five months of the year, the sea temperature stays above 20°C.

Zadvarje Market

The picturesque village of Zadvarje, located on the edge of the Cetina River canyon, has hosted a traditional livestock and goods market for over 300 years. Historical records from 1708 confirm its long-standing importance in local life and economy.

In earlier centuries, the market thrived thanks to its strategic location as the only pass from the interior to the sea, facilitating trade between coastal and inland communities—even reaching Bosnia and Herzegovina. Goods were transported by galleys to Vruja and then by caravans to Zadvarje, often under armed protection.

Today, the market is a vibrant cultural and social event, held every Tuesday, with special editions for St. Anthony (June 12–13) and St. Bartholomew (August 23–24). Visitors can explore local produce, livestock, homemade goods, and traditional crafts. In 2020, a modern indoor market was added, improving comfort during bad weather.
